International students are required to live either with their own parent or with one of our homestay families. The reason we insist on this is that we wish to control the quality of care provided by the homestay families. There are many foreign students in Vancouver; too many can be found out late at night as their homestay parents are more interested in the money than the welfare of the students. As in all major cities, lonely young people who wonder aimlessly around the streets, or linger in late-night coffee shops, are vulnerable. We need to know that our students are cared for properly by their homestay families, hence our strong quality controls.
